Spying on the Olympia app – possible but not proven, Olympia | Beijing Winter Games – Olympics

“There is always a real risk of being monitored in China. No country in the world monitors more,” agrees Benjamin Eyssel, ARD correspondent in China.

The supposed proof of the spying, which Jonathan Scott claims to have provided with the help of a complex analysis, nevertheless made waves from Thursday (01/27/2022).

“No actual evidence”

A lot of smoke for little, says Lilith Wittmann in an interview with the sports show. “Jonathan Scott has, on the one hand, repeated some problems that were already listed in the Citizen Lab report. On the other hand, he made some claims of his own, in particular that the app was constantly listening to users. However, he could not provide any actual evidence for these,” according to IT -expert. She confronted Scott with her doubts in a Twitter space. This was not able to clear anyone, it was “only left that there was something wrong in the AppStore”.

This, agrees WDR digital expert Dennis Horn, is annoying for Apple and Google, but quite common: “It has been known for a long time that the information in Apple’s App Store is somewhat uncritical with the apps.”

In a conversation with the sports show, Jonathan Scott defended his findings as evidence of the spying. WDR expert Horn listened to the arguments and came to the conclusion that they were not convincing: “It is not possible to see which data is actually sent to the Chinese government servers in the end. The analysis reveals what is theoretically possible – but not whether it actually happens in the end.”
