Spring weather and a dementia-friendly walking path: this happened today

From beautiful, sunny spring weather to a five hundred meter long walking path for residents with dementia. These are the five stories you must read on Tuesday.

Thursday will be a beautiful spring day with lots of sun and temperatures up to nineteen degrees. But campers pay attention: don’t forget your thick blanket, because at night the mercury drops sharply to two to four degrees. There is even frost on the ground locally. Near the villages of Vlierden and Ommel there are two dangerous crossings over the busy N279 for cyclists and pedestrians. Paul Willems comes there three times a week and regularly sees things going just fine, especially among students. Although the province has been talking about a solution since 2008, the crossing points will not be tackled until 2029. Read the whole story here.

A 57-year-old cyclist from Breda died last year after a collision in Rijsbergen. The 67-year-old woman from Rijsbergen who hit him was sentenced to 240 hours of community service and a driving ban of one year in court on Thursday. She did not look properly to the right at an intersection and overlooked four cyclists. Read the whole story here.

There is also good news. A dementia-friendly walking path was opened at the De Kerkebogten care center in Eersel on Wednesday. The five hundred meter long path makes it possible for residents with dementia to go outside for a walk independently. Bright blue forget-me-nots on the paving stones show the way. “I see residents blossoming,” says employee Lieve Bouw. “A gentleman who could only go outside twice a week now goes four times a day.” Check out the whole story here.

Finally, a special story from the past. The brutal murder of brothers Toon and Piet Verhoeven near Oijen in 1934 will be given a monument in the form of a podcast, almost a hundred years later. Former journalist Arjo Kraak was involved in the robbery by four members of the Gang of Oss, in which Toon was killed. “While walking along the dike I thought: I have to do something with this,” he says. “Sometimes I just saw them standing here, those two old farmers.” The robbery was ultimately the reason to roll up the Gang of Oss.
