Sportschau – Goal of the year turns 50: Ulrik le Fevres volley magic – Bundesliga – football

It is the 52nd minute of the game – Günter Netzer’s shot from 18 meters should actually hit the goal, but Le Fevre is in the way. The ball sticks to his foot. Then the winger puts the ball up high himself and in a unique volley relay first outplayed Schalke’s left defender Jürgen Sobieray, then Klaus Fichtel, in order to also volley the ball into the lower right corner of the goal. Schalke’s goalkeeper Norbert Nigbur and central defender Rolf Rüssmann are only left with the incredulous look – as if they had just seen a magic show.

Art shooter le Fevre: “Everything ran instinctively”

“It all happened instinctively“, said Le Fevre years later in an interview with the football magazine 11 Freunde. “I put the ball over the first defender, then over the second and then volleyed into the goal from the turn“is how the fine technician himself described this soccer feat.

In the WDR2 conversation, le Fevre looked back on Sunday: “First we played against Inter Milan on Wednesday, I scored two goals in this can-throwing game. And then we played against Schalke on the Bökelberg on Saturday. They were in first place. But we won 7-0 and I scored two goals again shot. “

Le Fevre is now retired and lives in Denmark. He still follows Borussia Mönchengladbach on television, but does not see every game. “I went to Gladbach almost every year, but it doesn’t work during that time”, the 75-year-old regretted the current situation during the corona pandemic.

Training to become a secondary school teacher

Le Fevre came to the Bökelberg in the summer of 1969 from the Danish first division club Vejle BK. Coach Hennes Weisweiler had had an eye on the striker for a long time, but first he wanted to finish his secondary school teacher training.

In three years Le Fevre won two German championships with Mönchengladbach and was an important part of the legendary “Foal Elf”. In 1972 he moved to Club Bruges. But its tradition was continued. Because for him there were two more dangerous Danes who should cause a sensation: Henning Jensen and Allan Simonsen.

The second TdM for Gladbach

Le Fevre was also the second goalscorer of the month for Mönchengladbach, but the first “guest worker” to win the coveted gold TdM plaque. Before the Dane, Günter Netzer had already been successful in April 1971.

The goal of the year was launched in 1971 by the ARD next to the goal of the month. Since then, the respective goals of the month have been competing against each other in a final vote.
