Fifty asylum seekers will be housed for three months from October in a sports hall in the Emmer district of Bargeres. The municipality has designated the site as an emergency shelter.

It is not the first time that the sports hall on the Calthornerbrink has been used as an emergency reception location. This also happened in the summer.

The municipality comes to the rescue to relieve the crowds in the application center in Ter Apel. It has been agreed nationally that each security region must receive 450 refugees. The municipalities of Drenthe must do their part in this, as they have previously agreed.

According to the municipal council, the sports hall in Bargeres is the best option. The hall is now being prepared for use in the future to accommodate fifty people. “Because the sports hall has a relatively low occupancy and there are good experiences with previous times, this location was chosen again,” the municipality said.

The building will soon have permanent supervision and security. Efforts are also being made to keep asylum seekers busy by organizing activities.

Users of the sports hall and the shopkeepers’ association have now been informed. An alternative place has been arranged for the clubs that use the hall.
