Aleksandar Pavlović has been missing in the FC Bayern squad for a long time. Now it is also known what the professional suffers from.

FC Bayern Munich also had to do without Aleksandar Pavlović in the round of 16 second leg in the Champions League near Bayer Leverkusen (2-0). The German record champion announced last Friday that the midfield player “laboratories on a persistent infection”. Bavaria’s sports director Max Eberl has now revealed details.

After the progress in the “premier class” on Tuesday, the 51-year-old said: “He (Pavlović, editor’s note) has Pfeiffersche’s glandular fever. That takes time.” The German international has been missing from Munich since the end of February. When he is back in the squad is so far open.

Pfeiffersche’s glandular fever is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and mainly transmitted via saliva. The disease typically manifests itself through fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat and strong tiredness, whereby the symptoms can often last for several weeks.

Bayern had to do without Pavlović longer last year. The 20-year-old suffered a broken collarbone at the end of October and, according to “transfermarkt.de”, was missing for 36 days. Pavlović also missed the home European Championships in the summer of 2024 after he had an tonsillitis.

Shortly afterwards he decided to have his almonds removed during the summer break. Now a stubborn infection has caught him again. So far, he missed the 3-1 away win at VfB Stuttgart and the 2-3 defeat against VfL Bochum last Saturday in the Bundesliga and the two games in the round of 16 of the Champions League against Bayer Leverkusen.

And it comes even harder for Pavlović: next Thursday, national coach Julian Nagelsmann will nominate his squad for the international break at the end of March when it comes to the Italian selection in the quarter -finals of the Nations League. Pavlović will most likely not be part of it. For Bavaria, the Bundesliga continues on Saturday at Union at Union Berlin (from 3:30 p.m. in the T-Online Live ticker).
