FC Barcelona about five weeks without defender García

1.15 pm: FC Barcelona will have to do without Spanish central defender Eric García for about five weeks. The international, who celebrates his 21st birthday on Sunday, was out on Saturday evening against Granada (1-1) after an hour with a hamstring injury.

García has been a fixture at FC Barcelona this season. He played fifteen matches in La Liga. García played in FC Barcelona’s youth academy and moved to Manchester City in 2017. Last summer he returned to Catalonia.

FC Barcelona is sixth in La Liga after twenty rounds. On Wednesday, Real Madrid will be the opponent in the battle for the Supercup, which is played in Saudi Arabia.

Robin Haase meets Slovakia in Australian Open qualifications

10.26 am: Robin Haase takes on Andrej Martin in the first round of the qualifying tournament for the Australian Open. With his ranking of 116, the Slovak is placed first in the preliminaries, Haase has dropped to 230th place.

In total, three Dutch men participate in the qualifications. Tim van Rijthoven meets the Argentinian Facundo Mena, Jesper de Jong meets the Australian Akira Santillan.

In the women’s race, Lesley Pattinama-Kerkhove, Arianne Hartono, Indy de Vroome and Richèl Hogenkamp try to qualify for the main tournament. Pattinama-Kerkhove will face the Chinese Yuan Yue, Hartono will meet the Australian wildcard player Talia Gibson and De Vroome and Hogenkamp will play against the Polish Urszula Radwanska and Anna-Lena Friedsam from Germany respectively.

Three wins entitles you to a place in the main tournament. The qualifications are next week, the main tournament starts on Monday 17 January.

Memphis Grizzlies book eighth consecutive win against Los Angeles Clippers

9.40 am: The Memphis Grizzlies basketball players have booked their eighth consecutive win in the NBA. Thanks in part to 26 points from Jaren Jackson Jr. the Grizzlies also won at Los Angeles Clippers. It was 123-108. Memphis Grizzlies made the difference in the second period: 38-20.

The visitors from Memphis could not have top scorer Ja Morant in Los Angeles. Coach Taylor Jenkins, who was at home following the corona protocols, was also not there.

“After seeing this; if we’re healthy and guys come back we might have to yell at some players if they don’t do what these guys did,” the absent Morant joked.

Memphis Grizzlies could set a club record this weekend in LA. They also have to win the away game against LA Lakers. The club has never won nine consecutive matches before. The Memphis club is fourth in the Western Conference, the Clippers have dropped to ninth place.
