Spiders on the rise this fall, but don’t kill them: ‘Then you’ll get wasps everywhere’

Are you afraid of spiders? Then you are in for an exciting autumn. The pest control company Beestjes Kwijt sees a doubling in the number of reports of spiders. But according to Arachnologist and spider enthusiast Peter Koomen, we have nothing to fear and we should cherish the eight-legged creatures.

“The annoying thing is that it has so many legs,” Lisa from Amsterdam tells NH Nieuws. “That really gives me the creeps.” Lisa has a spider phobia and is definitely not waiting for an increase in the number of spiders. In particular, the rise of the False Wolf Spider terrifies her. When she encounters a spider, Lisa immediately grabs the vacuum cleaner. But she better not do that, says arachnologist and West Frisian born Peter Koomen.

The work of the spider

“If you kill a spider, you have to take over that spider’s work”, Koomen explains. “And then you have to kill 53 flies.”

According to the spider lover, there is absolutely no need to be afraid of spiders. All the way in the Netherlands, according to Koomen, it is not that bad in terms of size or toxicity of the eight-legged creatures. He gives another piece of advice to all North Hollanders who suffer from spiders this fall: “Just let them live, and if you have problems, bring them outside.”
