A special supervision team is starting today to combat the problems with nuisance-causing asylum seekers in the municipality of Cranendonck. The team of 4 supervisors will work until the end of the year in the places where nuisance occurs most.

This is initially a 10-month trial. The team will show itself at the location of the COA in Budel, in the shopping area and in public transport. They start working there on working days, but if it turns out that the hours can be used more effectively, deployment at other times is also possible.

State Secretary Van der Burg:

“I have no sympathy for people who ask for our protection, but then abuse our hospitality. The group of asylum seekers who cause nuisance may be small, but the impact on those affected is enormous. That is why we have reserved money in the cabinet for an approach to combat nuisance. At the front by preventing it from happening, such as with the deployment of a special surveillance team. But if it does happen, we will take it very seriously.”

Supervisory team approach

The team in the municipality of Cranendonck focuses in particular on preventing nuisance behavior by asylum seekers. The team is therefore committed to personal contact with the target group and also has the necessary experience for this. In addition, there is close and frequent contact with local residents, shopkeepers and entrepreneurs, the local police, the COA and the transporters. The same team started at the end of last year in Ter Apel (municipality of Westerwolde) to combat nuisance.

Broader approach to nuisance

There is a small group of people who use the hospitality in the Netherlands, but then misbehave. The government has therefore already made € 45 million structurally available for a more intensive and stricter approach to nuisance-causing and criminal asylum seekers. This team is part of that.

Nuisance and criminal asylum seekers must be removed from our reception system as quickly as possible. This group ruins it for the rest and undermines support for shelters for people fleeing war or persecution.
