Friends van Hoek gave him up last June and hoped ‘that he would finally receive an award for his work’. “It is a wonderful award and we are extremely proud of him”, says initiator Marianne Tensen. The goalkeeper coach had no idea that he would receive the award and was lured to the Statenlogement with an excuse. “It’s the first time I’ve seen him break in his life,” Tensen said.

Quiet

The surprise made a big impression on Hoek. “I’m quiet about it and that doesn’t happen often, but I certainly am now.” The Horinees defended FC Volendam’s goal from 1973 to 1985. In 1977 he rose to the Eredivisie with the club for the first time. From 1985 Hoek started working as a goalkeeper trainer at Ajax, where he first worked together with trainer Louis van Gaal in the 1990s. He got the young goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar under his wing.

clubs

“Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Galatasaray and the Dutch national team”, mayor Jan Nieuwenburg sums up during his speech. There are only a few clubs where Hoek has worked and that makes the Horinees very popular.

In addition to Hoek, the mayor hands out a total of twelve ribbons. “We have a really tight schedule,” he laughs. “I hope we can stick to that schedule, but it looks like it’s going to be delayed.”

“It is an enormous form of appreciation. In fact, everything that I have always done with great pleasure”
