The Greek Basketball Federation officially announced that 43-year-old Vassilis Spanoulis will continue as the head coach of the Greece National Basketball Team. The experienced coach will be the head of the team in the FIBA 2027 World Cup European Qualifiers, which will start at the end of November.
Spanoulis will be on the court in the matches to be played against Romania in Thessaloniki on 27 November and against Portugal on 30 November. This process will continue at an intense pace after Monaco’s EuroLeague match against Anadolu Efes on November 26.
Greece will compete with Romania and Portugal, as well as Montenegro, in Group B of the 2027 FIBA World Cup European Qualifiers. The three teams that pass the first stage will join the top three teams from Group A (Denmark, Georgia, Spain, Ukraine) to begin a new six-game series. The top three teams at the end of this second round will win World Cup tickets.
NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo’s commitment to the national team was also effective in Spanoulis’ continued employment. Antetokounmpo announced that he would continue to play for Greece under Spanoulis management after winning the bronze medal at EuroBasket 2025.
Vassilis Spanoulis, who has been at the head of the national team since 2023, attracted attention with the eighth place in the Paris 2024 Olympics, the third place in EuroBasket 2025 and the successes achieved in the 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualifiers.
