The group match between Ajax and Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday will be led by Spanish referee José María Sánchez. This was decided by the European football union UEFA on Monday.
Some Ajax players met Sánchez last summer in Brussels, where he was the arbitrator in the 4-1 victory of the Orange against Belgium. More than a year ago he whistled the Champions League match between the Portuguese Sporting and Ajax, which the team from Amsterdam won with no less than 5-1.
Ajax only has any prospect of a sequel in the Champions League if it wins on Wednesday. Napoli has already qualified for the next round with 12 points. Liverpool has 9 points, Ajax only 3 while the Scottish Rangers are scoreless at the bottom. On the final day of the group stage, Ajax has to visit Glasgow, while Liverpool then plays at home against Napoli.
