Suspended South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol is charged with rebellion and leading an uprising. Various news agencies reported this on Sunday. He is under criminal investigation. If Yoon is found guilty, the charges could lead to death or life imprisonment, according to AP and others.
In early December, the president unexpectedly declared martial law, sidelining parliament. A few hours later, this state of emergency was lifted, bringing the ‘self-coup’ to an end. Ultimately, his action led to a suspension a few days later, after parliament had approved this. Impeachment proceedings are currently underway against Yoon. Within hours, his decision plunged South Korea into a political crisis that continues to this day.
Yoon was arrested in January. In an earlier attempt to do so, his security guards, among others, refused to let officers in. After extending his detention, hundreds of his radical supporters stormed a court. Dozens of people were arrested.
