Sophia Jansson opened Yle’s Moomin reading marathon.

Author of the late Tove Jansson’s niece Sophia Jansson was the first Mightily Moomin reading marathon reader. Opening the marathon was exciting, even though Jansson is a regular reader.

– For some reason, this moment was exciting. Maybe there’s something festive about it, though, which then makes you a little nervous. But it’s wonderful to hear everyone else’s voice reading, it was a great experience, Jansson praises.

Jansson is delighted that his aunt’s works come to life in the marathon.

– You just have to read them again and again all the time.

Comfort reading

Sophia Jansson is a recent debut author. His Memoirs Three islands: father, mother and me appeared in the fall of 2025. In the book, Sophia Jansson also remembers her aunt Tove.

Above all, Sophia is known for her position in the Moomin Characters company that oversees the Moomin characters. Sophia Jansson, who is now part-time retired, is the company’s main shareholder and its former artistic director. Today, he serves as the chairman of the company’s board.

For Sophia Jansson, overseeing Tove Jansson’s characters has also been nurturing her aunt’s art. The themes of the Moomin stories are universal, but they also touch people on a personal level, says Jansson.

– I think that books give comfort in a time like this, when the world is in turmoil. People need something to hold on to. The Moomin books somehow explain the world to us. Then it’s easier to continue, says Jansson.

President Stubb did not want to speak to the media at the Moomin marathon. Atte Kajova

Stubb did not comment

The president of the republic was heard as the third reader Alexander Stubbia. He read his first part in Swedish, and later in Finnish.

The interview with Sophia Jansson was interrupted when Stubb left Yle’s studio building and Iltalehti tried to get an interview from her. Stubb smiled at reporters but didn’t say a word.

Stubb already announced in advance through Yle’s communications that he would not give an interview to the media.
