Sony plans to enter electric car market | Abroad

Sony also wants to start selling electric cars. The Japanese electronics company has presented a new prototype of its Vision S electric car for the major tech fair CES, which will be held this week. Sony also announced the creation of a new business unit, Sony Mobility, to explore this fast-growing market.

The presentation of the Vision-S 02 took place at one of the press events leading up to the largest trade fair for the tech industry. During an earlier edition of that fair in Las Vegas, Sony had already shown a so-called concept car, but it seemed to be mainly intended to display technological gadgets that were incorporated in the car. For example, Sony already makes sensors for self-driving vehicles and is big in cameras and other electronics.

CEO Kenichiro Yoshida told Tuesday (local time) that his company is investigating a commercial launch of its own Sony car. “Sony is well positioned as a creative entertainment company to redefine mobility,” he emphasized.

With this, the Japanese follow other large tech companies, for example Google parent company Alphabet, which are already making the way in the field of cars. Details about, for example, the price of the Sony car or the date it will be on the market were all not given. The electric car, which Sony says is packed with internal and external sensors, is still being tested on the road, including for its ability to drive without a driver.

Playstation VR2

In addition to the announcement about the car, Sony had another piece of news. The company has now officially announced the PlayStation VR2. That is a virtual reality headset for Sony’s latest game console, the PlayStation 5. Earlier it appeared that the group is working on a successor to the PlayStation VR.

On special press days, before CES opens to a wider audience on Wednesday, several major tech companies unveiled their latest gadgets this week. For example, Samsung presented new televisions, Nvidia showed new graphics chips and Intel unveiled new processors for laptops. But due to concerns about the omikron variant of the coronavirus, many large companies have also canceled the event this year. For example, Amazon, Twitter and Facebook parent company Meta announced that they would not come this time.
