Son born for the World Cup
Her son Sontje Hansen, who started his football career at the Hoornse Sportvereniging Sport 1889, chose the Curaçao national team in September. Earlier this year he played matches for the Dutch Juniors, but national coach Michael Reiziger did not select him for the youth European Championship.
For his mother, choosing Curaçao is a dream come true, she says on the phone. “I gave birth to this son to take Curaçao to the World Cup.”
This choice turned out well for Sontje, who shares the field at Curaçao with, among others, Tyrese Noslin (Telstar) and Armando Obispo (PSV). The team won 7-0 against Bermuda and scored a goal after a nice attack.
Green pea in the Caribbean Sea
Due to the performance of the national team, it is ‘madhouse’ in Willemstad, says his mother. “The football fans have asked everyone to wear blue, the streets are decorated and a special mass was organized in the church this morning. I didn’t want to miss this.”
Curaçao’s success is also making waves in the Antillean community in the Netherlands, says Hansen. The match can be seen on a big screen tomorrow night in Rotterdam and Dordrecht. “We are a small island, a pea in the Caribbean Sea. Until now, no one knew our flag. I am incredibly proud that we have come this far.”
