Tarikh Janssen plays Sonny Boy

On the eve of his 37th birthday, Waldy Nods, the same age as his father, tries to sort out the memories of his parents. They must come from far away and there are not many of them. When he was fourteen, Rika and Waldemar were torn from his life by the Second World War. As a boy he was torn between Dutch relatives where he never felt at home. As a man, he hopes to find his basis in the stories about his parents, Dutch and Surinamese. Why was he their sonny boy? What part of them is in him? Who does he really belong to?

With the monologue Sonny Boy come Rika and Waldemar Nods from Annejet van der Zijl’s novel come to life again. Now through the eyes of their son. The son they never saw grow up and couldn’t protect. The son who had to cope through the glare of their absence in a world where he was not always welcome. The leading role is played by Tarikh Janssen.

Sandwich with Edward van de Vendel

Writer, poet and translator Edward van de Vendel wrote the national poetry gift of 2024. He will come to Haren on Thursday afternoon to talk about this collection and his work during a ‘Sandwich with…’. The central theme of this year’s Poetry Week is ‘home’. The house of poetry consists of more than just bricks. Poets build houses from memories, smells and colors. They describe the houses of our youth and the streets of our dreams.

They write their poems on a corner of our kitchen table and stare at the paintings on our walls. The most beautiful words often arise in the place where we feel most at home. You can register today via supersaas.nl/schedule/geboekt/geboektinharen.

Haren – Library, Thu 1.30 pm, 7 euros, incl. sandwich and glass of (butterm)milk

Spanish atmosphere with Musica Retorica | Advertisement

Chamber choir Musica Retorica and instrumental ensemble, both led by Christofoor Baljon, present a predominantly Spanish-language program with music by composers from the 15th to the 18th century. The title song of the performance Dime, sad coraçon by Francisco de la Torre (1460-1504) dates from the early days and is the complaint of a suitor who is laughed at by his beloved. Aeste sol by Tomás de Torrejón (1644-1728), contains a jubilant song of praise to the sun.

Furthermore, the audience hears music with bitter feelings of guilt (Sebastián Durón), fear for the future (Carlos Patiño), a beloved child ( Dormi, dormi o gran bambino by Giuseppe Balzano) and intense devotion (Francisco Valls) in works by composers from Spain, Guatemala, Peru, Mexico, France and Italy. The concert can be visited on Sunday January 28 in Winsum, February 3 in the Margarethe Church of Norg and February 4 in the Pelstergasthuis Church in Groningen. See musicaretorica.nl.

Blue check marks with recognizable characters

The cabaret duo Blauwe Vinkjes was a finalist at Cameretten 2021 and won the Audience Award of the Amsterdam Student Cabaret Festival a year later. The duo, formed by Kevin van den Berg and Manon Blaauw, made waves with their topical cabaret, songs and high tempo. In their full evening show Disclaimer they take on the role of recognizable characters and characters and take the viewer along in their satirical acts.

They ask the question which disclaimers should be placed today and which social norms still apply. With parodies, imitations and compelling songs you are confronted with today’s society. Meet the hip influencers Look and Luna, folk singers Koos and Alberta and the slightly too proud wedding planners Saskia and Rufus.

Sharp questions with the Southern Theater

Het Zuidelijk Toneel plays on Wednesday What Ever Happened to Mr. Pete? at the Grand Theatre. Based on the work of Harold Pinter, Samuel Beckett, Luis Buñuel and David Lynch, director Sarah Moeremans and writer Joachim Robbrecht a performance about Mister Pete. The audience sits next to each other in two groups, but does not see each other. The stands and the playing floor are divided in two by a wall. Who sees what? Do they see the same thing? What is reality and why are we so eager to understand it? Who is Mr. Pete? And who are we actually?

The alienating theater experience is a search for the truth behind Mr. Pete. In times of algorithms, digitalization and the celebration of our happiness as a free individual, the performance asks pertinent questions. A performance about loneliness, community and losing control. A shared quest, because Mr. Pete gets to know himself in short, funny scenes, populated by a colorful group of characters.
