The Turin player plays a great first set and then suffers the return of his opponent who wins 3-6 7-6 (5) 6-4. The three unconverted break points at the end of the second set had an impact

Nothing to do for Lorenzo Sonego, who stops two points away from the match in the round of 16 of the ATP 1000 in Paris. After winning the derby with Lorenzo Musetti, the Piedmontese, number 45, stopped at the end of a beautiful match against the Russian Daniil Medvedev, number 13 in the world, who ultimately won with a score of 3-6 7-6 (5) 6-4. The former number one thus keeps alive the very small hope of still qualifying for the Finals at the expense of Musetti, and in the quarterfinals he will face the winner of the evening match between Zverev and Davidovich Fokina.

sonego show

Sonego’s first set is spectacular. A 6-3 in 39 minutes with an almost petrified Medvedev. The Turin player took to the court knowing exactly what he had to do and he does it to perfection, with great aggression combined with a physical form that he had already demonstrated in the previous weeks, including yesterday against his doubles partner Musetti. The break that was made decides the first set and arrives immediately, in the second game, when Sonego breaks the Russian’s serve, then keeping his foot on the accelerator for the entire set, after canceling a break point in the third game against the Russian.

medvedev’s comeback

In the second set, Medvedev started very strongly, immediately breaking Sonego and taking the lead at 4-1. In the seventh game the Turin player brings the match back “on serve”, and at 5-4 he also cancels a set point from the Russian. Sonego risks remembering the eleventh game for quite some time, given the three break points he had and not exploited which would have sent him serving for the match. We reach the tie break, where the Italian goes ahead 3-1, but at 5-4 some errors occur and the Russian scores three points in a row, taking the second set. In the third the break for the former n.1 comes immediately, going up with the serve and not granting any more opportunities to Sonego, until the final 6-4.
