Sonego eliminated in Shanghai: he lost in two sets to Jarry

The Chilean beat the Italian 7-6 (4) 6-2, making up for the defeat in Davis. Dimitrov, Paul, Rublev and Schwartzman also advance, who eliminates Fritz in the third tie break

Giuseppe Di Giovanni

Nicolas Jarry beats Lorenzo Sonego for the first time in his career and reaches the round of 16 of the Masters 1000 in Shanghai, eliminating the Italian 7-6 (4) 6-2. Fantastic on serve, the Chilean makes up for Bologna’s defeat in Davis and advances to the round of 16.

THE MATCH

Jarry, an excellent server and in the best moment of his career, is practically unplayable when serving and never allows break points. Sonego responds and holds mentally, canceling a break point (which probably would have been worth the set) in the ninth game. At 5-5 (on serve) Sonego pulls off the shot of the match with a forehand passer (all wrist) after a great backhand from the Chilean. We go to the tie-break where Lorenzo suffers the Chilean’s great serve and misses two shots, especially a backhand off the dribble which gives the 7-4 to Jarry. In the second set the number 22 in the world takes confidence and finds a super game in the fourth game, taking off with his backhand. In the next game Jarry cancels a break point and consolidates the advantage. Sonego collapses completely and when he serves to defend the match he concedes 3 match points to his rival and cancels them, before giving in to the advantages. Jarry finishes 6-2 and advances in an hour and 43 minutes.

THE OTHERS

Meanwhile, Dimitrov is moving forward and could meet Carlitos Alcaraz in the round of 16. The Bulgarian beats Khachanov in two sets (and with difficulty). Tommy Paul also passes, confirming that 2023 was the best year of his career. The American beats the Frenchman Fils in the third set, an enormous talent who is destined to do great things. The crossroads is with Andrey Rublev, who dominates the Frenchman Mannarino. Jarry’s opponent will be Schwartzman, who in the best and most intense match of the day eliminates Fritz in the tie-break of the third set.
