Soccer, 2nd Bundesliga: Hamburger SV keeps Fortuna Dusseldorf at a distance

Status: 03/31/2023 8:26 p.m

Hamburger SV comes to a draw at Fortuna Dusseldorf and keeps the competitors at bay in the promotion battle of the 2nd Bundesliga.

At the start of the 26th matchday, the two teams drew 2-2 (2-1) on Friday evening (March 31, 2023) in the sold-out arena with 52,200 spectators.

Fortuna with coach Daniel Thioune, once in charge at HSV, is still seven points behind Hamburg, who are relegated to promotion.

Huge support for HSV and a quick lead

Around 20,000 Hamburger SV fans were in the Arena am Rhein. They also celebrated the 30th anniversary of the founding of the “Supporters Club”, which, with more than 65,000 members, is the club’s largest branch. Coach Tim Walter’s team therefore appeared in special jerseys, and they quickly brought great joy to the supporters.

Robert Glatzel received a precise pass from Miro Muheim and was alone in front of goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier when Jordy de Wijs illegally interrupted him from behind. Referee Robert Schröder immediately awarded a penalty, but László Bénes didn’t score straight away. It was only in the margin that he made it 1-0 for HSV in the fifth minute and thus his third goal of the season.

Directly in front of their curve, the Hamburg fans then saw how the lead was carelessly lost. After a corner kick from close range, Dawid Kownacki headed the ball unchallenged and equalized (21′).

Fortuna followed suit seven minutes later through the strong Felix Klaus, who had been released brilliantly. Düsseldorf’s lead at the break was well deserved.

Own goal equalizes

HSV, who sorely missed their captain Sebastian Schonlau, was superior in the second half. However, that didn’t bother Fortuna for a long time, because the guests hardly came dangerously in front of the goal. But when a good attack was successful and Sonny Kittel was in a good finishing position, Christoph Klarer tipped the ball away, but into his own goal (75′).

Shortly before the end, Hamburg’s Francisco Montero saw the yellow-red card for repeated foul play.

Düsseldorf in Bielefeld, Hamburg welcomes Hanover

On the 27th matchday, Düsseldorf will be visiting Arminia from Bielefeld (Sunday, April 9th, 2023, 1.30 p.m.). The day before, HSV receives Hannover 96 at 1 p.m.
