After decades as a successful Hollywood director, Spielberg made his music video debut this year with the production of Marcus Mumford’s “Cannibal”. In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday (November 21), actress Carey Mulligan opened up about how her husband and the director icon got together.

“Cannibal” was released on Mumford’s solo debut (self-titled) in September this year.

“Wouldn’t it be crazy if we asked Steven?”

Earlier this year, Mulligan starred in Spielberg’s 2023 film Maestro. The actress revealed in an interview with Kimmel that she learned during the joint production that Spielberg’s wife Kate Capshaw was a big fan of Mumford & Sons. She then sent Capshaw Mumford’s current album. “Not long after, we got a video of Steven and Kate dancing to one of the songs in their kitchen,” Mulligan said. “It was so beautiful and the two of them were so supportive and sweet.”

Months later, on set, Mulligan got a call from Mumford, who had an interesting idea: “He said, ‘We really need a video, and I just had this idea, and wouldn’t it be crazy if we … wouldn’t it be rude if we Ask Steven?’ And I said, ‘Steven – sorry, sorry, Steven Spielberg?’” Mulligan explains. After the idea was born, the hoped-for cooperation came about in July.

Mulligan’s latest film, She Said, is currently in theaters. Spielberg produced the films Jurassic World: Dominion and The Fabelmans in 2022. It was recently announced that the director will also receive the “Honorary Golden Bear”, a prize for his life’s work, at the Berlinale in 2023.
