The ongoing snowfall in Livigno has led to another cancellation of the Winter Olympics – and could also throw the Nordic combined athletes’ schedule into disarray.
For ski freestylers, the men’s jump, which was actually planned for Thursday, had to be postponed due to announced “significant snowfall”, as the World Ski Association Fis announced.
The expected amounts of snow would lead to even more adverse conditions than on Tuesday, when there were also changes to the schedule for the freestyle skiing aerials competition. The safety of the athletes has the highest priority, it said.
The qualification will now take place on Friday from 10:30 a.m., with the final starting at 1:30 p.m. German athletes are not taking part in the aerials competition.
Bad weather prospects also for the combined athletes
The Nordic combined athletes are also worried about their team competition due to the weather. Ski jumping is actually supposed to start on Thursday at 10 a.m. on the large hill in Predazzo.
The decisive cross-country skiing race of the team sprint is planned for 2 p.m. in Tesero. However, large amounts of fresh snow are also forecast here, along with wind and rain. As with the freestyle event, the combined events could also be postponed to Friday.
For the German combined athletes, it is the last chance to prevent an Olympic debacle. If Vinzenz Geiger and Johannes Rydzek don’t make it onto the podium, it would be the first Winter Games for the German Ski Association since 1998 where they would go home without a medal in the discipline.
