According to project manager Thomas Lambrecht of the Ypres company RTS, the system filters out passenger cars and local traffic. “Based on measurements, we can determine whether it concerns through traffic or loading and unloading. Only violators will be sanctioned.”
Anyone who drives through the center without permission risks a fine of 184 euros. A so-called white list will be created for drivers who do not have an alternative route. They can, after motivation, be exempt from fines.
The investment amounts to 170,000 euros and is fully supported by the RIHO police zone, which also has access to the camera images.
“The white list is intended for those who really have to pass here every day and can prove this,” says Mayor Pillaert.
The system should be fully active by June.
