The new construction of the Mariaschool in Eelde is becoming many times more expensive. The municipality of Tynaarlo needs another 1.6 million euros to carry out the entire project, while 3.3 million had previously been set aside.

Due to, among other things, the requirement for oblique roofs and increased construction costs, construction is more expensive than expected. The municipality does not want to adjust the plan to build flat roofs, for fear that local residents will object to this and that construction will take much longer.

The majority of the extra costs are because the municipality in the school building now also wants a childcare. There was no room for that in the original plans. In addition, more money is needed for the construction of parking spaces, a Kiss & Ride and making the road safer at the school.

Due to lack of space in the current building, it was decided to give the Mariaschool its own place. As a temporary solution, groups 7 and 8 of the Mariaschool and two groups 4 of OBS De Veenvlinder have already moved in 2021. To this day, these classes are still in a building on the Schoollaan in Paterswolde.

The new school building will be on the Wolfhorn in Eelde, near the current location of the Mariaschool and the Veenvlinder. The city council still has to vote on making extra money available. That happens on April 1. The intention is that the new school building will be there in April 2026.
