So far, according to Customs, 23,000 cigarettes have been found. It concerns packages and slippers from the L&M brand. The cigarettes were washed up on the beach between Wijk aan Zee and Camperduin. The majority of cigarettes were already wet and therefore no longer used.

“We have never encountered this before,” a customs spokesperson told NH. Customs supervision of goods that proceed with the outdoor limit of the European Union. The west coast of the Netherlands is such a European limit.

Because there may be more packages with cigarettes, customs are still looking for more cigarettes on the beach, a spokesperson confirms.

“You don’t want this on the beach. In addition, we want to get a total picture of what was washed up and we try to find out where they (the cigarette packs, ed.) Come from.”

Camping guests find packs of butts

The first find was made yesterday afternoon off the coast of Egmond aan Zee. The rescue brigade there went on a report of a possible drowning person in the water, but found a large black garbage bag instead.

When the lifeguards opened the bag on the beach, it turned out to be a garbage bag full of slippers cigarettes. It is estimated that the package weighed five kilos and there were about 600 packages in it.
