The German team took second place in the mixed competition in Willingen. The victory goes to the strong Slovenians.
The German ski jumping team is traveling to the Olympic Games with a lot of tailwind. The quartet around Agnes Reisch, Selina Freitag, Karl Geiger and Philipp Raimund celebrated second place at the Mixed World Cup in Willingen. Only the Slovenians around the Four Hills Tournament winner Domen Prevc and his equally strong sister Nika were better that day. Third place goes to Japan.
The Ski Jumping World Cup in Willingen became a game of patience. Dense fog and lots of wind put the jumpers to a tough test. The start had to be postponed again and again and the waiting times were correspondingly long.
Geiger in the team “set up based on performance”
The DSV relied on Selina Freitag, Agnes Reisch, Philipp Raimund and Karl Geiger in the mixed team. It was a difficult season for Geiger. He even missed qualifying for the Winter Games. But he was still seeded when jumping in Willingen: “He deserves it”said national coach Stefan Horngacher in an interview with ZDF. “He was the second best man and we set up based on performance.”
Agnes Reisch was the first German jumper to start. But she also had to wait a long time before she could jump. Covered up, she sat out the waiting time in the icy wind before it finally started. The long break also affected her jump. After landing, she waved her hand in disappointment. “The worst thing is that you spend so long in the shoe that is so tight and then you no longer have any feeling.”she said. “I’m sorry for the others.”
Geiger and Friday with a strong performance
Things went much better for Karl Geiger. He landed at over 138 meters and is slowly getting back to his old performance. There was even a special round of applause from teammate Raimund for his jump.
Friday also delivered and the German team even took first place. Raimund, the last German jumper, had to wait a long time before he could start.
Domen Prevc untouchable
Similar to Reisch, the wait also affected his jump. But Germany remained in the lead – until the dominator of this season showed what he was made of. Despite thick fog and a lot of wind, the jump by Four Hills Tournament winner Domen Precz ensured the Slovenians’ victory. This means that Germany missed out on victory by just 0.6 points.
The second round was canceled due to the difficult conditions. Nevertheless: The DSV athletes can look positively towards the Olympics after a mixed season so far.
