The manipulation scandal around the Norwegian ski jumpers recently brought unrest in the ski jumping circus. Now an Austrian is very clear.
Daniel Tschofenig has had an outstanding season in the SkiSprung World Cup-eight World Cup victories and winning the large crystal ball speak for themselves. But the memories of the past World Cup spoil the picture: the Austrian remained in the singles without a medal. Instead of sporting highlights, another incident shaped the major event – a manipulation scandal around the Norwegian jumper.
The frustration with Tschofenig can still be felt months later. In the “Tyrolean daily newspaper”, the 22-year-old clearly commented on the events around the Norwegians. “We have often thought why things look a bit strange for them,” he said, adding: “I understand that in principle everyone wants to get the best out. But if it goes into a gray area, I say: Is that still acceptable?”
For him it is clear where the border runs: “I definitely don’t want to go into illegal. It can also happen that you get a disqualification if you are simply a centimeter there. But I find this tactical shit under all the sow,” said Tschofenig.
Above all, the reaction of the Norwegian team is angry with the ski jumper. Tschofenig cannot understand the attempts to play down the incident: “You knew it. We all agree very well and I just can’t find that correct.”
He caused a lack of understanding that the Norwegians subsequently presented themselves as victims. “You have discredited all of the ski jumping and stand up as if you were the victims of the whole. It is the whole ski jumping.”
