Actually, the men’s Kandahar departure should have taken place last Sunday. However, they were canceled bad weather – a catch -up date is.
Last weekend, athletes and ski fans were looking forward to the famous Kandahar descent in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. But due to poor visibility and fog, the event was canceled. Now it is clear that the race will be made up for. The Ski World Association (FIS) announced on Monday that the departure on March 7 should take place in Kvitfjell in Norweg.
The cancellation in Garmisch last Sunday triggered discussions. The German Ski Association (DSV) criticized that not all possibilities were exhausted. DSV alpine director Wolfgang Maier said: “It already affects us that you have no alternative or solutions.”
US-speed head coach Burkhard Schaffer was also upset. He told the Swiss “look”: “What the athletes did here is in my eyes refusal.” On the upper section of the route was sun on the Kandahar and fog below. However, the athletes either wanted to complete a complete training or none. FIS race director Markus Waldner, on the other hand, said that he could “understand the athletes’ decision very well”.
The race on the Kandahar would have served as a dress rehearsal for the World Cup in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, which begins on Tuesday and runs until February 16.
