Skating fun in the province: from cautious first time on Bernoulliplein to hundreds of fanatics on Marumerlage

While marathon skaters were preparing for the second marathon on natural ice in Noordlaren, elsewhere in the province on Wednesday, less professional but equally enthusiastic skaters also glided over frozen water.

In Veendam this happened for the first time on Veenlustplein, where the municipality had water sprayed for the occasion. It was very busy around the temporary ice rink in the center of the village. It is also possible to skate here on Thursday.

After a number of successful experiences, it was a success again at the Bernoulliplein in Groningen. The municipality had flooded the large lawn along Korreweg with a pump on Tuesday morning. The expected frost then did its work and provided a beautiful ice surface where even the little ones carefully slid around during working hours.

In Alteveer, Groningen, it was very busy on Wednesday at the ice rink of the ice skating club De Toekomst. However, with the recent wet weather, many people did not have to wait today for ice masters from local ice clubs to give the green light.

For example, entire families braved frozen fields in Kiel-Windeweer and in Marum hundreds of skating enthusiasts dared to skate the first meters of 2024 on the Marumerlage along the A7. Even though the ice was not equally thick and reliable in all places in the stream valley, no major accidents occurred or people fell through the ice.

Tomorrow you can still skate in many places, but after this the ice will thaw and the skating fun will be over.
