In Drenthe, a total of sixteen people died in the last five years due to murder or manslaughter. It concerns ten men and six women, according to figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).

In comparison with other provinces, Drenthe, looked at the number of victims per inhabitant, is in eighth place. In our province, it concerns 0.56 victims of murder or manslaughter in our province. In Friesland (0.25), Utrecht (0.42), Flevoland (0.50) and Overijssel (0.54) that figure is lower. Most murders in relative terms were in South Holland (0.92), followed by Noord-Holland (0.91) and Limburg (0.80).

Between 2020 and 2024, a total of 635 people were killed by murder or manslaughter, 420 men and 215 women. This continues the falling trend, although the number of murdered women is declining less strongly. According to the CBS, more than half of the women were killed by the (former) partner. They were often killed in their own home, usually with a stab weapon or by strangulation.

The fact that men are more often victims of murder or manslaughter is attributed to, among other things, criminal conflicts and violence between acquaintances. More than 70 percent of men were killed with a fire or stab weapon.
