Overview: sixteen dead, 59 injured in Kremenchuk shopping center, G7 speaks of war crime

These are the main developments from Monday evening and the night from Monday to Tuesday:

  • Death toll after Russian missile attack on a shopping center in the Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk has risen to sixteen. At least 59 people were injured in the busy shopping center where a fierce fire broke out.
  • Leaders of the G7 countries have described the “abominable” attack as a war crime† “Arbitrary attacks on innocent civilians constitute a war crime,” they said in a joint statement. Earlier, at their summit in Germany, leaders of the rich industrialized countries said they would continue to support Ukraine “as long as necessary” with “financial, humanitarian, military and diplomatic aid”.
  • Former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev warned on Monday that if NATO invades Crimea, Russia will take it as a declaration of war. That could lead to World War III, Medvedev said. The former president also said Russia would take “retaliatory measures” if Sweden and Finland join NATO, possibly by placing missiles “on their doorstep”.
