Six new spreading machines make spreading more efficient when it is slippery in Noordenveld

The municipality of Noordenveld took delivery of six new spreading machines in Peize today. The machines were placed behind the existing vehicles. Some can be hung behind a tractor via the trailer. The new gritters mean that both brine and salt can be spread in the municipality of Noordenveld, while in previous years only brine was used.

Edwin Dokter, coordinator of ice control at the municipality of Noordenveld, is happy with the machines. According to him, they are safer for the road user, because more preventive spreading can be done, but also because the amount of salt and brine can be spread more effectively.

The old gritters had plastic containers in which the brine was stored. No road salt was used, because there was a shortage of it about ten years ago. With the new machines there is both brine and salt on the spreader. “You cannot spread preventively with brine and you can with salt. If you know that ice or slippery conditions are predicted, you can start spreading. Then there is salt on the road surface and then you at least know that at the moment that it will freeze, it will not become slippery. You always have to sprinkle with brine afterwards because brine water works immediately. The moment you spray with brine water preventively, it does not work when you need it.”

Also new is the control panel that every spreader now has. Via a screen that is connected next to the driver, it can be seen whether spreading is actually taking place at that time, how much salt and/or brine should be sprinkled and which route the car should drive. “It’s a kind of navigation system,” explains Doctor. “The system takes care of everything itself. It’s a matter of switching it on and then the system picks it up. It indicates how wide it should spread. Of course that differs per road section. Now it indicates 6.5 meters, but later it will sink back.” to 5.5 meters.”
