The German national team also wins the second test in the World Cup year. The result is closer than it should have been. The individual criticism.
William Laing reports from Stuttgart
The 4:3 in Switzerland is followed by a 2:1 against Ghana. In Stuttgart, the German national team got a deserved victory, which could have been better given the many chances to score. But a lack of utilization of these opportunities and a partial lack of tactical discipline made the game unnecessarily exciting. National coach Julian Nagelsmann also sees a need for improvement. “We no longer filled the positions well, had a lot of freestyle again, like in Switzerland. Then we are very vulnerable to counterattacks,” said the national coach on ARD after the game.
Nagelsmann liked the first 25 minutes. But after that it became too undisciplined for him. When temperatures are low in Stuttgart, the resulting long distances are not a problem, but they are at the World Cup in the hot USA. The team made it “a little difficult for themselves,” said Nagelsmann.
Even though Deniz Undav’s winning goal came in the 88th minute, the national coach “didn’t tremble”, but: “We can’t eat the 1-1 result like that,” criticized Nagelsmann.
The DFB team’s good, but also negligent performance on the one hand is also reflected in the grades. Six national players received a grade of two, while two others had to settle for a grade of five. You can find the complete individual review with all the grades here or in the photo show above.
For national coach Julian Nagelsmann it is now about the next steps towards the World Cup. For him that means: opponent analysis. On Tuesday he will be at group opponents Ecuador’s game in the Netherlands. “The idea won’t change that much,” he said, but added: “We have to have a lot of discussions and make final decisions.”
