American singer and actress Irene Cara is dead. Cara passed away on Friday November 25, 2022 at the age of 63. The cause of death has not yet been announced. Cara’s best-known track was “Flashdance… What A Feeling” — the theme song to the 1984 film Flashdance, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Original Score.

Cara’s death was confirmed by her publicist, Judith A. Moose, on Twitter. “It’s the absolute worst part of being a publicist. I can’t believe I have to write this, let alone publish the message,” Moose said. “Please share your thoughts and memories of Irene. I will read every one of them and know she will be smiling from heaven. She loved her fans.”

Winner of multiple Grammy Awards

Irene Cara was born Irene T. Escalera on March 18, 1959 in New York City. Already as a child she could be heard on Spanish-speaking television and radio and was on big stages. Her international breakthrough came in 1980 with the film Fame, to which she also contributed the title track.

Three years later, ‘Flashdance’ followed — the title track (which she co-wrote) ‘Flashdance… What A Feeling’ won her an Oscar and two Grammys — one for ‘Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female’, another for ‘Best Album Of Original Score Written For A Motion Picture Or A Television Special Flashdance Nominations. In later years it became quiet about the musician. In 2001 she celebrated a smaller comeback alongside DJ Bobo, but she did not achieve great success.
