Sinead O’Connor: Cause of death confirmed

Six months after her death there is certainty.

Sinead O’Connor’s cause of death has been revealed six months after her death. The Irish singer died of “natural causes,” according to the London Medical Examiner’s Office. This is reported by the “New York Times” in a statement from the coroner published on January 9, 2024. It was also revealed that the authority “has therefore ceased its involvement in her death”, although no further details about the cause of death were given.

Sinéad O’Connor died last July at the age of 56 in a house in southeast London. Police said the death was “not being treated as suspicious” at this time. Shortly after her death, the medical examiner ordered an autopsy.

What does “natural death” mean?

In the case of a natural death, death occurs due to pre-existing internal causes, such as an illness (e.g. heart attack, stroke) or a tumor. This is usually a death due to illness or a death due to old age. Legally relevant factors, such as third-party negligence or influence, do not apply in the case of a “natural death”. This means it can be ruled out that the singer was killed by someone else. Suicide also falls under “natural death”.

Remembering O’Connor and Shane MacGowan

A concert honoring the late Sinéad O’Connor and Shane MacGowan will take place at New York’s City Winery on March 20th. Under the title “Sinéad & Shane at Carnegie Hall”, some of their friends from the music industry will come together and perform the two of their hits in their very own versions.
