Dan Greaney (61), the screenwriter of the ‘Simpsons’ episode that predicted Donald Trump’s presidency in 2000, is now running for the White House in 2028. In an Instagram video, dressed as a magician, he playfully announced his candidacy as a “progressive Republican”.

Greaney announced his election campaign on Tuesday via Instagram. Dressed as a wizard, complete with gray wig and blue cloak – a reference to his nickname “the prophet” – he explained his presidential ambitions.

“Trump, Vance and the billionaires have turned their backs on the United States,” is his argument. “For them, it’s about money, power and security, not about you. The United States was founded on the idea that all people are equal. Government should work for everyone. We need to fix this.”

After a comical note in which he complains that he “can’t help because he’s just a self-proclaimed prophet who happens to have a law degree,” he takes off his wizard costume. Underneath he wears a smart suit. “Wait! I can also be a politician. That’s why I’m running for president under the motto: America for everyone.”

Progressive Republican

Greaney, who graduated from Harvard, began ramping up his political discourse last year because he had a “premonition” that American politics would collapse. He was already posting videos in a cheap prophet costume in which he predicted the downfall of Donald Trump.

It is striking that Greaney profiles himself as a “progressive Republican in the tradition of Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt”. He turns against his own party, but does not spare the opposition either. In an earlier video, he accused the “backless Democrats” of refusing to stand up for the people when they had the chance. According to his campaign office, Greaney aims to restore democratic norms, combined with progressive plans such as universal health care and the Green New Deal.

New warning

Greaney is best known as the author of the ‘Simpsons‘ episode “Bart to the Future” from 2000. In that episode, Lisa Simpson becomes president and inherits the financial problems of her predecessor: a then fictional President Trump. In a 2016 interview, Greaney called the episode “a warning to America.” “I then hinted that the Trump administration had failed. At the time, that seemed like the logical last stop before we hit rock bottom.”

Now the writer comes up with a new prediction: “The end of Trump’s presidency is near. It is risky to put a date on it, but we will move forward united as a nation and as a people,” he said. The announcement makes Greaney one of the first to file for election in the 2028 elections.
