Signs against racism: National players kneel in Munich

The German national soccer players together with the English took a stand against racism before the start of the Nations League game in Munich.

Players from both teams got down on one knee just before kick-off. Referee Carlos del Cerro Grande also joined in. The British use the gesture, which is widespread in sports, before every game.

Ilkay Gündogan had announced the day before that the DFB selection would follow. “Because of course we want to support the action of the English, because it’s a very good thing,” said the 31-year-old Gündogan, who plays for the English champions Manchester City. There was also a kneeling together a year ago at the European Championships before the German round of 16 at London’s Wembley Stadium.

On June 4th, the English team got down on their knees just before kick-off as a sign against racism in the game in Budapest against Hungary. Then boos could be heard from the audience. Because of the discriminatory behavior of its fans at the European Championship games against Portugal, France and Germany, Hungary’s association was sentenced to two UEFA home games without spectators. This penalty was later reduced to one game.
