Sifan Hassan also grabs a medal at 5,000 meters at the World Athletics Championships | NOW

In the night from Saturday to Sunday, Sifan Hassan failed to win a medal in the 5,000 meters at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene. After her fourth place a week ago in the 10,000 meters, the Dutch finished sixth this time.

29-year-old Hassan was briefly on course for a slice on the final lap at Hayward Field Stadium, but several athletes passed her on the final stretch. The gold went to the Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay in 14.46.29, Beatrice Chebet from Kenya took the silver in 14.46.75 and the bronze went to the Ethiopian Dawit Seyaum (14.47.36).

Hassan finished in 14.48.12 and was therefore a small second away from the podium.

With her sixth place, Hassan closes the World Cup for the first time in seven years without a medal. In 2015, she took World Cup bronze in the 1,500 meters, in 2017 she did that again and three years ago in Doha she won the world title in the 5,000 meters and the 10,000 meters.

Hassan tempered expectations beforehand

After her extremely successful years – with three Olympic medals (twice gold and once bronze) in Tokyo as a highlight – Hassan tempered expectations in the run-up to this World Cup.

The two-time world champion went on a long vacation and only started preparing ten weeks before the World Cup. Hassan can therefore live with the fact that she ends the tournament without sticking, although she came close in the 5,000 meters.

Hassan was constantly running in the group, while more and more athletes could not keep up with the pace. In the last round she wanted to seize her chance. Hassan took the lead, but on the last stretch she wasn’t strong enough to finish it.

As a result, the Dutch team remained on four medals (three times silver and once bronze), which equals the record number of World Cup medals in London in 2017. Then there was one gold and three bronze. On Sunday, the last day of the World Cup, pole vaulter Menno Vloon and hurdler Nadine Visser will come into action and they can help the Netherlands to a record number of slices.
