Short track star Xandra Velzeboer wins another 500 meters in the World Tour
Short track star Xandra Velzeboer also won the 500 meters at the second World Tour in Montreal. The reigning world champion at this distance was faster in the final than Courtney Sarault from Canada and Kristen Santos-Griswold from the United States.
Michelle Velzeboer won the B final. She finished sixth overall.
Jens van ‘t Wout and Daan Kos were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 1000 meters. Van ‘t Wout crashed and Kos finished fourth in his heat.
In the mixed relay, the Netherlands had finished fourth in the final earlier on Sunday due to Van ‘t Wout’s fall.
Judoka Noël van ‘t End will end his career at the end of this year
Judoka Noël van ‘t End will end his career at the end of this year. The former world champion in the 90 kilogram class will say goodbye on December 21 during the National Championships in Almere.
The 34-year-old Van ‘t End won the world title in Tokyo in 2019. He won bronze with the mixed team of the Netherlands at the World Cup two years ago. Van ‘t End has been on the podium of a grand slam ten times, including three times on the highest step. He won, among other things, the Paris tournament.
Van ‘t End competed three times at the Olympic Games but did not win a medal there. He last played at last year’s Games in Paris. Van ‘t End was subsequently suspended because he had made a mistake three times within twelve months in reporting his whereabouts. The whereabouts are necessary for any doping controls outside competitions.
SC Freiburg draws the last game before the clash with FC Utrecht
SC Freiburg drew the last match before Thursday’s meeting with FC Utrecht. The team saved a point in the final phase against Eintracht Frankfurt (2-2).
Derry Scherhant gave Freiburg the lead. Jonathan Burkardt then scored twice for Frankfurt. Vincenzo Grifo signed for the final score in the 88th minute.
Freiburg receives FC Utrecht for a match in the Europa League. The club took 4 points in the first two matches of the second competition for UEFA club teams. FC Utrecht is still winless in the Europa League after two matches.
Turner Schmidt sees his chances of reaching the all-around final shrinking further
Gymnast Casimir Schmidt saw his chances of reaching the all-around final (top-24) at the World Championships dwindle further on Sunday evening local time in Jakarta. Schmidt is in 21st place after six of the eight subdivisions. The last two subdivisions will be played on Monday morning before the final result is known.
Schmidt did not get further than 74.463 points in the qualifications due to major mistakes on floor and vaulting. After the match he stated that he had not been fit due to illness and he estimated his chances of reaching the final were already low. “I think I can forget him. But of course it would be nice if I did get him and I could get revenge,” Schmidt said after the match.
Bart Deurloo, Loran de Munck and Jermain Grünberg had already been eliminated on high bar, vaulting and bars respectively. Deurloo is still in the best position: eleventh (13,833) on rack. The top 8 per device will reach the final. Grünberg is fifteenth (13.666) on bars, De Munck is provisionally 61st on vault after two falls (11.666).
Luiten shared sixth at a golf tournament in India
Joost Luiten finished joint sixth at the DP World India Championship. At the DP World Tour golf tournament in New Delhi, the 39-year-old Bleiswijker had to concede five strokes to winner Tommy Fleetwood from England, who won with 22 strokes below the course average.
Luiten, like Fleetwood, achieved a round of 65 strokes in the final round, seven below the track average. The round with seven birdies was his best this week, moving him up six more places.
The Dutch golfer already finished third at a tournament in India earlier this year. He finished fifth at a tournament in Turkey and fourth in Munich, Germany.

Ruud wins tournament in Stockholm
Casper Ruud has won the tennis tournament in Stockholm. The second-seeded Norwegian defeated Frenchman Ugo Humbert in the final in the Swedish capital: 6-2 6-3.
Humbert benefited from an injury to Holger Rune during the semi-final on Saturday. The first seeded Dane won the first set (6-4) but had to retire in the second set (2-2) when the score was tied.
Ruud won an ATP tournament for the fourteenth time. He also won the prestigious tournament in Madrid this season. He did not allow any break points on his own serve against Humbert and won a service against his opponent three times.
Van de Zandschulp does not go to the main tournament in Basel
Botic van de Zandschulp failed to reach the main tournament in Basel, Switzerland. The 30-year-old Dutchman was eliminated in qualifying by the American Reilly Opelka: 6-4 6-4.
Van de Zandschulp lost on Thursday in the second round of the tournament in Brussels. He lost there to the American qualifier Eliot Spizzirri: 5-7 0-6.
Van de Zandschulp has recently started working with his new coach Raemon Sluiter. The number 86 in the world rankings is experiencing a changeable season with more lows than highs.
Medvedev wins tournament in Almaty
Daniil Medvedev has won the Almaty tournament. The Russian tennis player was too strong for the Frenchman Corentin Moutet in the final in the largest city of Kazakhstan: 7-5 4-6 6-3.
The 29-year-old Medvedev won his 21st title in the ATP circuit. His previous victory was almost 2.5 years ago when he was the best in Rome. Moutet has never won an ATP tournament. The 26-year-old Frenchman was in the final for the third time after losing performances in Doha and Mallorca.
Medvedev lost the final of the tournament in Halle, Germany last summer. The winner of the 2021 US Open was no match for Alexander Boeblik from Kazakhstan.
Rybakina and Fernandez win WTA titles
1:47 p.m: Elena Rybakina has won the Ningbo tennis tournament. The global number 9 from Kazakhstan was too strong for Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova 3-6 6-0 6-2 in China.
Rybakina (26) was unable to repair a quick 3-0 deficit in the first set, but then hit back hard. She won nine games in a row, before Alexandrova took another game. The winner of Wimbledon in 2022 won with a second break at 5-2.
Canadian Leylah Fernandez (23) won the fifth WTA title of her career at the Osaka tournament. The world number 27 defeated Czech qualifier Tereza Valentova 6-0 5-7 6-3 in the final in Japan. Fernandez, a losing finalist at the US Open in 2021, also won the Washington tournament earlier this year.
Turners Deurloo, De Munck and Grünberg were eliminated early from the World Cup
1:47 p.m: Gymnasts Bart Deurloo, Loran de Munck and Jermain Grünberg were eliminated early at the World Championships in Jakarta. After four of the eight subdivisions, the trio is already outside the top eight on horizontal bar, vaulting and bars respectively. A place among the best eight is necessary for a place in the apparatus finals. Heptathlete Casimir Schmidt still has to wait a long time to see whether his score is still sufficient for the all-around final (top 24).
World Championship debutant Elijah Faverus also did not come close to an apparatus final on vaulting and rings. Four more subdivisions will follow (two on Sunday, two on Monday), after which it will be known where the results will take the gymnasts.
This year’s world title battle is an individual tournament where medals can be earned in the all-around and on the various apparatus. Sanna Veerman and Naomi Visser are in action for the women.
Cyclist Magnier takes fifth stage victory in the Tour of Guangxi
12.25 pm: Cyclist Paul Magnier has concluded the Tour of Guangxi with his fifth stage victory in China. The 21-year-old Frenchman from Soudal Quick-Step was the fastest in the sprint of a thinned peloton in the sixth and final stage. The British Paul Double secured the overall victory.
The Pole Stanislaw Aniolkowski finished second in the 133 kilometer stage with start and finish in Nanning, ahead of the Frenchman Paul Penhoët.
It was Magnier’s nineteenth victory of the season. He won the first four stages in China, after which he had to relinquish the lead in the rankings to stage winner Double on Saturday.
Motorcycle racer Fernández takes first victory in MotoGP in Australia
10.26 am: Motorcycle racer Raúl Fernández has achieved his first victory in MotoGP. The 24-year-old Spaniard from Aprilia-Trackhouse left the Italians Fabio Di Giannantonio and Marco Bezzecchi behind during the Australian Grand Prix on Phillip Island.
It was also the first time for Fernández to stand on a podium in MotoGP. “I can’t believe it,” said the Spaniard. “The team has always continued to support me. This is the result of hard work.”
The Spaniard Álex Márquez, number 2 in the World Cup standings, finished fourth. His brother Marc Márquez secured his seventh world title in the premier class of motorsport at the Japanese Grand Prix at the end of September. The world champion was missing in Australia after shoulder surgery. He had a hard crash in the Indonesian Grand Prix at the beginning of October.
The Dutchman Collin Veijer rode to twelfth place in Moto2. His compatriot Zonta van den Goorbergh crossed the line in 22nd place.
