Shock hits the Schumacher family after David’s heavy crash in DTM race | Other sports

The racing talent had to be transported to the hospital by ambulance. Initially only several bruises were found there, but the damage turned out to be greater in the end.

“When David came home, he was still complaining of back pain,” Ralf Schumacher, who, like his brother Michael, has been active in Formula 1 for many years, told the German news agency DPA. “Then we decided to go to a hospital in Salzburg to have an MRI. It turned out that a lumbar vertebra was broken.”

Despite the damage to his spine, it is relatively not that bad. “According to the doctors treating David, it means he needs to rest for about six weeks,” continues Ralf. David, who was in his first season in the DTM, does not require surgery. He will have to wear a corset for the time being to allow his back to fully recover.

Racing is in the Schumacher family’s blood. For example, Mick Schumacher has been driving on behalf of Haas in Formula 1 since 2021. He is the son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, who suffered serious brain damage in a skiing accident in 2013.
