Ben van Beurden, the CEO of oil and gas company Shell, will step down next year. That reports Reuters news agency Friday based on insiders. Shell wants this message on NRC neither confirm nor deny.

Van Beurden succeeded the Swiss Peter Voser as head of Shell in 2014. Before that, Van Beurden, a chemical engineer who graduated, had held numerous technical and commercial positions in the Netherlands, Asia, the United States and Africa. During his period as boss of the company, Shell, which was first half Dutch, has become completely British.

The insiders tell Reuters that Shell has four possible successors in mind for Van Beurden. The potential candidates are already working at Shell, including in senior positions in the gas and renewables and finance departments. According to Reuters, Van Beurden’s successor could again be a Dutchman.
