The fast fashion giant Shein announced on Friday that it was setting up its own foundation. The nonprofit Shein Foundation will act as the “philanthropic arm” of the Shein Group, the company said in Singapore. The aim of the foundation is to promote inclusion and sustainability in regions in which the group operates.
The plan is to also locate the company’s existing aid projects under the umbrella of the new foundation. According to its own information, Shein has already distributed a total of more than 26 million US dollars (25 million euros) to social and sustainable initiatives in the period from 2021 to 2024.
The group supports the ACT Foundation with five million euros
At the same time, the group announced that its new foundation will support the Africa Collect Textiles (ACT) Foundation with a sum of five million euros. The organization is the charitable arm of Africa Collect Textiles (ACT), which organizes the collection and recycling of used clothing in Kenya. The project creates new jobs and helps avoid textile waste, said Shein.
Donald Tang, Shein’s executive chairman, explained the establishment of the group foundation. “It has always been a core part of our corporate philosophy to strengthen and give back to the communities in which we operate,” he said in a statement. “With the creation of the Shein Foundation, we are consolidating our charitable efforts under a formal philanthropic structure, creating greater accountability and transparency in our giving. It also strengthens our ability to direct our charitable giving in more impactful and sustainable ways, allowing us to better support causes and organizations that align with our values.”
