The armaments group Rheinmetall explains possible cooperation with the VW group.
A VW plant in Osnabrück today visited a delegation of the armaments group, a VW spokeswoman confirmed on request. “Possible potential for further cooperation between the Joint Venture Rheinmetall Man Military Vehicles was discussed,” she said. “There are no concrete derivations for the location.” The “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” had previously reported about it.
According to the newspaper, Rheinmetall boss Armin Papperger also took part in the meeting. The head of the truck subsidiary MAN, Alexander Vlaskamp, and Group board member Gunnar Kilian, who is also responsible for the group’s truck business, came from the VW side. Rheinmetall did not want to comment on request.
Rheinmetall was recently mentioned as a possible prospect for the VW plant in Osnabrück. However, his CEO Papperger had recently commented cautiously. The existing systems would only be used to a limited extent for an armor, and the conversion would be expensive, he said. But: “Before I build a new work for tank in Germany, of course we look at it.”
IG Metall evaluated the possible interest of Rheinmetall as evidence of the future viability of the location, but warned of a premature task of the work. “VW management must carefully consider whether it wants to do without this well-rehearsed and highly qualified team,” said Osnabrück union leader Stephan Soldanski. “It would be short -sighted to one -sided on the Armaments To concentrate. “The IG Metall sees numerous opportunities to build new contract manufacturing for various industries in Osnabrück under the roof of Volkswagen.
VW open to commitment to military projects
VW concert chief Oliver Blume openly showed itself to the balance sheet template in mid-March for increased engagement in military projects, for example in military burden on how to offer you and Rheinmetall together. So far, however, there have been no concrete conversations, he added at the time. Man and Rheinmetall have been working in the Rheinmetall community company Military Vehicles and build military trucks based on MAN based. Rheinmetall also works as a civilian car supplier.
The VW plant Osnabrück has 2,300 employees. In addition to the T-Roc Cabrio, vehicles for the group sister Porsche are currently being manufactured: Boxster and Cayman. The production of the two Porsche models is expected to expire in 2026, and in mid-2027 the production of the VW convertible.
According to media reports, VW had already calculated a closure of the location last year, but had moved away again after the tariff cleaning with IG Metall. The former Karmann location Osnabrück came to Volkswagen in 2009 after the bankruptcy of the previous convertible mandate.
In Xetra trading, the Rheinmetall share ultimately showed 2.96 percent lower at 1,310.00 euros, while the VW share gave 2.36 percent to EUR 96.96.
