Shakespeare theater Diever plays Romeo and Juliet, but just a little bit different

The Shakespeare Theater in Diever gives the world-famous play by the couple in love Romeo and Juliet a new look. The open-air theater went in search of both characters in one figure, who has feelings of both Romeo and Juliet.

Sounds complicated, but that’s not too bad, says artistic director Jack Nieborg. “It’s just as complicated if you want to make it yourself,” he puts Radio Drenthe into perspective. “It’s surprisingly simple how this turned out to be possible in Shakespeare’s story,” referring to famed English poet and writer who wrote the tragedy.

The new play that Nieborg drew started out of the sheer curiosity inherent in an enthusiast like him. “We now live in a time with different forms of love and intimacy,” explains the theater maker. “I was curious about what was possible with this primeval story of Romeo and Juliet, because such a story can only survive if we translate it into the primeval love form, as Shakespeare once intended. And that was not too bad.” he knows by now.

The curiosity also arose from the contacts with the Diever youth, who, according to Nieborg, develop a different view of love than he did in his younger years. “It is interesting to investigate this further,” repeats the director, who is confident in a packed theater during the announced performances. “It’s almost sold out, so I think it’s going to run wild.”

Friday 3 March is the premiere of the new production.
