Neuer & ter Stegen in front at the DFB
Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp once again delivered a strong performance in the 2-0 win against 1. FC Union Berlin for a place in the World Cup squad of national coach Hansi Flick. “Everyone knows that I am ambitious. Of course I also want to offer myself for the national team,” said Trapp after his gala performance on Saturday. However, the 32-year-old does not want to make any claims. “We have a very high quality in this position in Germany. You have to prove yourself every week. You don’t have to talk yourself into anything. First and foremost, I try to help the team and the club. Everything else comes after that.”
Despite the absence of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (36), Trapp was not used in the most recent international matches of the DFB selection against Hungary (0: 1) and England (3: 3). Marc-André ter Stegen (30) guarded the German goal in both games. Flick had previously declared the FC Barcelona goalkeeper number two behind Neuer. Trapp is currently in third place in the ranking of the national coach.
For Eintracht’s sports director Markus Krösche, the ranking would look different. “Kevin has put in some outstanding performances over the past few months. For me he is the best German goalkeeper,” said Krösche on “Sky”. Coach Oliver Glasner agreed: “Of course, if the sports director says that, he’s right. He’s been playing at the current top level for a long time. I’m glad he’s with us.” Trapp himself sees his current backup role in the DFB team as pragmatic. “I can’t control what happens in the national team. Except what I have in my hands. And that’s my own achievement,” he emphasized, but also felt flattered by Krösche’s praise: “Of course, when the boss says that, it’s very nice. I think I’ve made good progress since the last game.”
If you only look at the market values of all German goalkeepers, Trapp is currently in fifth place with 7 million euros. The most valuable goalkeeper in Germany is ter Stegen with 30 million euros, followed by Neuer (15 million euros) and equal equal Alexander Nübel (26; 10 million euros) and Bernd Leno (30; 10 million euros).
