Several teenagers were injured by fireworks during New Year’s Eve. Four victims between the ages of 10 and 16 reported to the Bernhoven Hospital in Uden and in Eindhoven a teenager lost part of a finger. Most of the injured suffered injuries to their eyes, hands or faces. Crowds in the Emergency Department (ED) varied greatly per hospital in Brabant.
It was an ‘extremely busy and intense night’ at the emergency department of the hospital in Eindhoven. A total of thirty patients arrived. Last year there were eighteen. “It is striking that the day shift starts after a regular night with only a few patients in the ER, this morning there were ten,” said a spokesperson for the hospital in Eindhoven.
Four teenagers arrived in Eindhoven during New Year’s Eve with fireworks injuries. Two of them required surgery. The other two could be treated in the emergency room. One of them lost part of a finger.
Two people had had too much to drink. The care providers also saw about ten people who had fallen off their bicycles while drinking alcohol and had been injured as a result.
Other places
It was also busy at Bernhoven Hospital. Eleven fireworks victims arrived at the emergency room, many with eye injuries. Four of them are between 10 and 16 years old and two are between 16 and 25 years old. The other five victims were older.
At the Máxima Medical Center in Veldhoven they saw a clear peak in the number of incoming patients around midnight, but the night was comparable to previous New Year’s Eve. In total, about fifteen patients were treated in the emergency department.
Five of the patients had fireworks injuries, including one minor. One of them was so seriously injured that specialist care was required. Seven patients with alcohol poisoning also arrived at the emergency room, two of whom were younger than 18 years old. In addition, there were three patients with drug-related complaints, including one minor.
The night was rather quiet at the A&E department of the Amphia in Breda, eighteen people were admitted. This is a lot less than last year. Then 27 patients arrived at the emergency room. Four of the patients had fireworks injuries. They were injured on their faces and/or eyes.
Two people had to be taken to the emergency room because they had drunk too much. At the GP post, which is located next to the ER in ‘the Amphia’, eight people were helped with fireworks injuries. Two of them were referred to the ER.
The crowds at the emergency room of the Anna Hospital in Geldrop were comparable to previous years. Three fireworks victims arrived at the ER. Two of them were injured in the eye and one in the hand.
It was a normal New Year’s Eve at the Elkerliek Hospital in Helmond. Two people arrived at the emergency room with fireworks injuries. They were not seriously injured. It was striking how many people had to be treated because they had drunk too much alcohol. There are six in total, several of which are minors.
