Seven NRW cities are applying to take part in the Women’s World Cup

Seven cities from North Rhine-Westphalia want to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup with their stadiums.

According to the German Football Association, Aachen, Dortmund, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen, Cologne and Mönchengladbach have submitted their application documents. The DFB had chosen the state of North Rhine-Westphalia as the German host region for the joint bid with the Netherlands and Belgium.

According to plans by the DFB, up to four German venues for the tournament are to be nominated by the world association FIFA in five years. “After the two big men’s football tournaments, it is now time to offer women’s football the platform it deserves. As mayor of the city of Gelsenkirchen, I have a great interest in putting a special focus on women in our city judge,” explained Karin Welge.

The DFB pointed out that the applicant cities must meet various criteria with their documents. Among other things, a letter of motivation should be submitted, in which impulses for the sustainability of the event should also be given. “Our aim is to find the venues that have a world-class
host a women’s soccer tournament in Germany. Not only on an infrastructural level do we set ourselves the highest standards here, the issue of sustainability, especially for women’s football, is a very decisive aspect,” said DFB General Secretary Heike Ullrich.
