Seven dead in textile factory fire in eastern China

Seven people have died in a fire at a textile factory in eastern China. The fire broke out on Monday evening (local time) about 150 kilometers west of Shanghai in the complex of a decorative thread manufacturer in the megacity of Wuxi, the authorities said on Tuesday. No other people were injured. Helpers found the victims after the flames were extinguished. The investigation into the cause of the fire was ongoing, it said.

Chinese state media distributed videos showing a building completely engulfed in flames in the dark. The company says it employs more than 800 people and is considered a large manufacturer in the region that sells its products at home and abroad.

Referring to the deadly fire, China’s emergency authority warned that the risk of fire is particularly high due to the dry winter weather and that companies should observe safety rules, especially where flammable materials are stored. (dpa)
