Setback for Austria, Italy wins crime thriller

After the historic victory over the Czech Republic, Austria’s national ice hockey team suffered a setback at the World Championships in Finland.

One day after the 2:1 after penalty shoot-out against the top nation, the Austrians lost 3:5 (1:1, 1:2, 1:2) against Norway in Tampere.

On Tuesday, Austria, who are only taking part in the tournament because Russia and Belarus were excluded, caused a big surprise and their first World Cup victory against the Czech Republic by beating the Czech Republic 2-1 after a penalty shoot-out. Previously, the underdog had unexpectedly scored a point against medal contenders USA.

In the German group in Helsinki, France narrowly avoided a defeat against Italy and won 2:1 (0:1,0:0,1:0) after extra time. The still winless Italy, like Kazakhstan, is increasingly becoming a relegation candidate.

The two worst teams in the groups have to take part in the B World Cup next year. France also only plays at the A World Cup because Russia and Belarus were excluded as a result of the Russian attack on Ukraine.
