Serious jazz and absurd humor on jubilee album by originally Groningen band Kuhn Fu | review ★★★★☆

In 2012, four international students at the Groningen conservatory formed the band Kuhn Fu. Since then, the formation has been working hard with rough jazz, in which rock, improvisation and agility à la Zappa are the basic ingredients.

On this anniversary double album, bandleader and guitarist Christian Kühn increasingly emerges as a performer. On the first CD he parodies the Piggelmee story in English with an exaggerated German accent. Now it’s about a poor jazz musician who is looking for the perfect melody. The fairy tale turns into a heady jazz rock opera.

Spontaneous and absurd

The second album contains a live concert, where Kühn presents stories in an equally spontaneous and absurd way. Here too, the alternation of serious music and humor ensures an intense performance. It is striking that the band plays together with saxophonists John Dikeman and Tobias Delius, both known from the Amsterdam jazz scene. For example, influences from Dutch improv can also be heard among the foreign musicians.
