Fans of 1. FSV Mainz 05 attacked a police officer before the Rhine-Main derby on Sunday at Eintracht Frankfurt (0-1).

According to a Rheinhessen club statement, the “serious incident” occurred after the departure of a special fan train from Mainz main station.

Members of a Mainz fan group attacked and injured an officer who was used to accompany the supporters and was familiar with the scene, the 05ers said. The police were able to catch the perpetrators later.

“The 1. FSV Mainz 05 is dismayed by this incident and condemns the events in the strongest possible terms,” it continued. “The association wishes the affected official a speedy recovery and will examine the exhaustion of all possible sanctions against those involved in the crime.”

In Frankfurt, the Mainz team experienced another sporting disappointment. Ritsu Doan scored the golden goal for Eintracht in the 81st minute after a great solo.

With 17 points, the Frankfurt team stayed in touch with the international places as seventh in the table. Mainz remains second to last in a relegation zone with five points.

Derby defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt “very bitter” for Mainz 05

“This is very bitter,” said 05 sports director Niko Bungert on “DAZN”: “We are very dissatisfied with the situation. We have to start collecting points quickly.”

Offensive player Paul Neben explained: “I think we played a good game for a long time, especially in defense. We were very combative and uncomfortable for Eintracht to play against. Offensively, we brought one or two crosses into the center, but they didn’t find a taker.”

When the goal was conceded, Doan “of course couldn’t have been allowed to get through in this form,” said the 23-year-old. “So it’s obviously bitter for us that we’re going home empty-handed because we deserved to take something with us from Frankfurt today.”
